The Bell XV-3 was the first aircraft to successfully demonstrate the concept of the "tilt-rotor" aircraft configuration. First flown in 1955, she led to the wildly successful Bell XV-15 program, which fathered the V-22 Osprey, Augusta-Westland 609, and a number of drone programs.

I did a short write-up on the development of tilt-rotor technology a few months ago: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
